Gramercy Court Sacramento, California - a healthcare community and residence in the heart of a residential neighborhood

APRIL 2009 NEWSLETTER

One a Day is the Vern Luce Way!

AVID Reader, he is! -More like voracious, we think. Resident Vernon Luce tells me, as he is turning the pages of his latest book, that he reads one book a day, most of the time. It is not unbelievable as he has his nose buried in his latest conquest each day. He takes a break from his reading only when it’s mealtime and if he attends an event. He has plans to attend the Reader’s Guild after our visit.

He tells me that he reads a book a day and has read more than 365 books in 2008. His most memorable was “The Man of the Forrest.” He prefers the fictional Western genre, with Zane Grey as a favorite author. “Although,” he says, “I like Historical Documentaries as well.” The thickest book was one about World War II and Winston Churchill.

He says he has finished a book that he started yesterday, but is a little behind on the current book because of “interruptions.” He is shown with Sandra Fong. “I’ve always been a reader, although I became more obsessed after my stroke.” He has been a resident at Gramercy Court since February of 2006. His professional life included being an Electrical Engineer for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

Vern confesses that he is a “Bibliophile” for his love of books. Accordingly, a bibliophile loves books, but especially "for qualities of format.” A bookworm loves books for their content, or otherwise loves reading in general. So it is safe to say, both titles fit Mr. Luce. The photo (R.) shows Activity Director Carolyn Strebel, reading and leading the discussion at the Reader’s Guild that meets each day.
